1. Project Description

Within the framework of the Project, students (PhD, MA and Senior BA) from universities in Georgia and Armenia will conduct joint research under academic supervision. The outcomes of the research will be presented at the resuming Workshop in

Yerevan to receive feedback on the quality and content.
Based on the research within the project, the students, in partnership and guidance of their academic supervisors and with support of the project staff will prepare round-table discussions in Tbilisi and Yerevan to enhance discussions in respective expert circles and interested groups. Selected students will have opportunities to prepare and/or take part in the open presentation and discussions of their research through media outlets.
Two most outstanding students will be offered a one-month internship opportunity in academic and research organizations in Armenia and Georgia.
Research groups will be formed in a way that each group has students from both countries. Coordination and academic facilitation of group work will be conducted mostly online with mid-term face-to face meetings with the team of academic supervisors and the project staff. Working languages of the groups are English and/or Russian. Based on the research questions, themes suggested by the students in the submitted application forms, the project team will discuss and come up with small projects to offer to the discussion with the selected students. The themes cover current (regional/global) political, social and cultural background/context for Armenia and Georgia. Thematic areas for the research initiatives may include but not limited to the following:

Georgia: Parliamentary Elections 2016; Public Administration and Civil Service reform; Civic education; Visa free regime with EU; EU oriented policies (Social and economic policies under DCFTA); Energy (Gazprom vs EU Energy Community, Iran energy resources); Migration; Georgian-Armenian relations; Cultural Heritage Policies

Armenia: Constitutional Reform: influence on further developments; Preparations for elections 2017; US-Armenia relations (politics, economy, soft power); EU-Armenia agreement (political, social, legal dimensions); Russian Military Presence; Migration; Georgian-Armenian relations in the light of infrastructural policies; Cultural Heritage Policies

Global/Regional Context

Syria; Armenia-Azerbaijan; Iran; Ukraine; Energy Policies; Russian-Turkish Relations; Eurasian Customs Union; Silkroad Project, etc..

2. Requirments for the Participants
1. PhD, MA and Senior BA students from Universities in Armenia and Georgia
2. Knowledge of English and/or Russian
3. High level of motivation
4. Prior experience in research in relevant areas of research (including areal studies) or high level of motivation in undertaking such tasks
5. Conscientious commitment

7. Brief Overview on Implementing and Partner Organizations

The project is initiated by “Hazarashen” NGO and funded by Heinrich Beoll Foundation South Caucasus. The project will be carried out in cooperation with the Center for Civilisation and Cultural Studies (Yerevan State University), Institute of Ethnology of Ivane Javakhishvili (Tbilisi State University), and Association of Anthropologists of Georgia.

8. Academic Supervisors and the Project Team

Archil Abashidze , is invited lecturer at Ilia State University. He is head of the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at the same university. His research interest include: public administration/civil service reform, interest group politics, development of public administration programs in the South Caucasus, case study method in political science/public administration. One of his recent publications is Challenges of Recruitment Procedures in the Georgian Civil Service, Romanian Journal of Political Science, Vol 15, number 2, Winter 2015 (together with Selimashvili, Giorgi).

David Hovhannisyan, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador, is director of the Yerevan State University based Center for Civilizational and Cultural Studies and Professor of Arabic Studies Chair at YSU. Research interests of David Hovhannisyan include Arabic and Islamic Studies, conflict resolution, Armenian-Turkish relations, international relations, regional cooperation and security with numerous publications on mentioned themes.

Hayk Kocharyan, Dr., is Associated Professor at the Chair of Arabic Studies, Yerevan State University. He is also one of the leading researchers at the Center for Civilization & Cultural Studies, Yerevan State University. Research interests of Hayk Kocharyan include adaptation mechanisms of regional/global political projects, Islam and Middle East studies. A recent publication of Hayk Kocharyan discusses the hydrocarbon facilities of the Islamic State (Yerevan 2015).

Hranoush Kharatyan, Dr., is Senior Researcher and Head of the research group on Applied Anthropology at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. Her current field of interests include the following themes: Caucasus Studies, ethnic, linguistic, social and other minorities, social culture of transitional societies, Armenian folk culture, memory studies, political repressions, etc. One of the recent publications of Hranoush Kharatyan discussing the memories of the past is Who to Forgive? What to Forgive? in “Speaking to One Another: Personal Memories of the Past in Armenia and Turkey” 2010, DVV International, Bonn, Republic of Germany.

Ketevan Khutsishvili, Dr., Ketevan Khutsishvili is professor at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University Institute of Ethnology at Faculty of Humanities, trained as ethnologist. Her main fields of interests are ethno-cultural processes in the Caucasus, religious issues, ethnic identity and relations, IDP studies. She is the author of three monographs in Georgian: ““Changing Religious Situation and Problem of Public Security in Georgia” (2004), “Ethnography of the Caucasian Nations” (2006) and “Dream and its Interpretation in Georgian Being” (2009)

Nino Chikovani, Dr., is professor at the Institute of Cultural Studies, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and is the Head of the UNESCO Chair of Intercultural Dialogue, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Her current field of interests includes the following themes: Identity problems in multicultural societies; Problems of intercultural and interreligious dialogue; Culture and religion in the Caucasus; Collective and historical memory; Perception and representation of history. The recent publication of Nino Chikovani is “Formation du narratif d’identité en Géorgie à la fin du XIXe siècle et au début du XXe siècle”, In: Les Constructions Identitaires dans les Espaces Francophones D’Europe Orientale et D’afrique.
