Who we are
Founded in 1985 the Irish Youth Foundation exists to make a positive difference to the lives of vulnerable children and young people. www.iyf.ie
There are over 1.2 million children aged between 0 and 18 living in Ireland today. Thankfully, most have happy and successful childhoods, but many others don’t. 1 in 5 children live in poverty; 1,000 children don’t make the transition from primary school to secondary school each year; 9,000 students leave school before sitting their leaving cert every year; an estimated 104,000 children under 15 are living with parents who misuse alcohol; and youth unemployment in Ireland is over 20%. These are the children the Irish Youth Foundation seeks to help.
How we make a difference
We provide financial support in the form, of grants to local community and voluntary youth groups working with at-risk and disadvantaged children, such as afterschool and homework clubs, summer programmes, sporting clubs, creative education projects and active citizenship activities. These groups provide safe places where children can go after school – to grow, to learn and to play.
For children who often experience poverty, parental misuse of drugs, and alcohol, crime and mental health issues, these projects are beacons of hope which enhance and improve their lives.
Our grants also provide opportunities for teenagers from disadvantaged and under-served communities to succeed and excel in their lives. In the last 30 years the IYF has raised over €20 million and supported 1600 projects on the island of Ireland, reaching 50,000 young people directly.
We are a small staff team committed to making Ireland a better place for children and young people to grow, to learn and to play. http://www.iyf.ie/About-Us/Team
YouthBank
The Irish Youth Foundation manages and supports the YouthBank programme www.youthbank.org YouthBank is a unique way of involving young people in grant-making within their local community. It is an all-island of Ireland initiative of over 25 grant-making committees run by young people with support from local youth organisations.
The funding distributed by these decision-making committees supports projects designed and run by young people that address issues and concerns relevant to them and their community.
YouthBank is not just about giving out grants, it is a personal development programme, which builds young people's self-esteem and confidence and provides them with an opportunity to learn new skills in leadership, team-work, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, negotiation, report-writing, presentation skills, event management and interview skills. YouthBank facilitates positive transitions to adulthood and provides transferable skills for life.
