Background information The Red Cross EU Office (RCEU) is a partnership between the 29 member National Societies of the EU/EEA (EUNS) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Founded in 1983, RCEU represents EUNS and the IFRC towards the EU Institutions, Brussels-based international and partner organisations, and NGO networks. RCEU supports its members by sharing information, building partnerships, and facilitating access to EU funding.
Our objectives are: 1) To increase Red Cross influence on EU policy, legislation, and practice so as to improve the humanitarian situation of the most vulnerable. 2) To mobilise EU resources for our members’ domestic and international work to maximise their reach and scope through a coordinated approach. 3) To serve our members on EU-related issues by monitoring the legal framework, exchanging information and knowledge, and providing tailored capacity building and technical support.

ob purpose The purpose of this position is to provide general support to the activities of the Communications Unit; contributing to the planning, development, and delivery of RCEU’s internal and external communications. The role is primarily editorial, and focused on digital communications (website and social media).
The position will enable valuable work experience in a small, but dynamic team. On-the-job training and other learning opportunities will be provided.
Key responsibilities Under the supervision and guidance of the Senior Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant will contribute to increasing the visibility of RCEU and its members’ activities towards EU stakeholders, promoting common advocacy objectives and messages, and supporting information-sharing with members through the development of targeted communications materials.
1) Copy-editing/proof-reading and layout The Communications Assistant will contribute to the development of all office publications (position papers, reports, leaflets, etc.) and key internal documents (monthly reports, briefing notes, overviews, etc.) by ensuring clarity and coherence through the copy-editing/proof-reading of texts, and by implementing a clean and consistent layout and design. He/she will also support the production of general briefings, presentations, and visibility materials on request.
2) External communications and digital The Communications Assistant will be responsible for maintaining a dynamic social media presence (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter) by sourcing and sharing members’ activities and news, and contributing to RCEU’s social media advocacy efforts and messages. He/she will also draft, create and upload content for the RCEU website based on sources from members, or self-generated articles and news (producing texts, photos, banners, etc.).
Finally, he/she will be responsible for producing regular digital analytics reports of RCEU’s outreach via its online channels, and support the communications and public relations aspects of key external events organised by the office. www.redcross.eu Representing EU Red Cross Societies and the IFRC 3) Internal communications and member support The Communications Assistant will support the administration and updating of the office intranet in consultation with policy advisors, as well as supporting follow-up on any queries regarding EU visibility requirements.
He/she will also contribute to EU-focused joint communications initiatives among members and internal tools to facilitate members’ communications on EU issues.
Person specification: Education/qualifications
- University degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field
- Good knowledge of the EU institutions and EU policy processes
- Proven interest in advocacy and humanitarian diplomacy Skills
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Detail-oriented, able to multi-task and take initiative
- Ability to work in a team and relate to other colleagues
- Good working knowledge of MS Office
- Experience in updating websites and social media outreach
- Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and InDesign) Languages
- Native-level spoken and written English
- Working knowledge of other EU languages is an advantage
Terms and conditions Paid internship for 6 months (net €751/ month) – Belgian Contract (“Convention d’immersion professionelle”) with the possibility of renewal for a further 6 months. In addition, the intern will receive a contribution towards travel costs and meal vouchers for every day worked. The applicant needs to have permission to work in Belgium.
