OVERVIEW
This training session will cover an introduction to how to use the open-source statistical software R, a popular program for statistical analysis in social science research. Introduction to the statistical software includes installing the software and learning the basics of the programming language. Specific topics include programming concepts, and how to produce basic statistics. The session would focus on using R to manage data and graphics. Working from elements of the book R for Data Science (available free here), we will discuss how to merge and clean datasets in more advanced statistics, produce basic graphs, and produce an R Markdown file (an html file with results).
TARGET GROUPS
The training is addressed to broad audience of social scientists. Knowledge of basic statistics is desirable; knowledge of English is a must. Participants are recommended to download R and R Studio onto their computers prior to the training.
TRAINER’S SHORT BIO
Ms. Coberly is a PhD candidate in Politics at the University of Virginia, where she studies party and party system development in transitional democracies and electoral authoritarian regimes. Her secondary research interests focus on the interaction of state capacity and political development and the domestic politics of Iran. A former American diplomat and Congressional aide, Ms. Coberly has a Masters in Russian and Eurasian Studies from Harvard University and completed her undergraduate degree at Cornell University.
