The project “Negotiation of Differences in the Shared Urban Space” aimed at collaborative publication of essay collection that encompass various insights on the Armenians’ and Turks’ experiences of sharing common urban space, negotiating differences, striving to attain or seize space for representation of belonging, identity, history, power, etc.
City is a space where numerous national, family and personal stories, memories, visions meet. Istanbul, Kars, Ani, Diyarbakir among others, are cities in Turkey where Armenians, Turks and other ethnic groups lived/live side by side. The cities have different meanings for each of them. Different perspectives of the places, diverse sights to the cities, a strive for a right to the places have continuously nurtured negotiation of differences and the endeavors for gaining a space for own culture, voice, memory, story, and representation.
The essays involved in the book discuss the negotiation of the differences in the shared urban spaces from the perspectives of architecture, urban planning, literature, musicology and travel experiences.
During the presentation the project initiators will talk about the project and the book to be published soon. Some of the co-authors will be present to share their experience of writing.
The language of the presentation will be English.
