Trainings at the University of Basel
The Dealing with the Past (DwP) team offers a 5-day training on DwP and Conflict Transformation at the University of Basel from 11-15 September 2017. Engaging with key debates in the field, it focuses on how to ensure that DwP processes support the transformation of violent conflicts. Learn more about this course or apply here. On 27-28 January, participants of the swisspeace CAS on Civilian Peacebuilding Essentials attended the 2-day thematic block on DwP. The participants explored the different pillars of DwP, with a focus on the case study of Colombia.
Prevention of violent conflicts and Dealing with the Past
Exploring the concepts behind Conflict Prevention (CP) and their relations with DwP mechanisms, swisspeace has started developing various activities related to CP. Since March 2016, the DwP team accompanies the Tanzania National Committee for the Prevention of Genocide in conceptualizing a CP and response mechanism. In March 2017, swisspeace offered a training on CP and Early Warning to the UN and AU Mission in Darfur. Lastly, from 3-5 May, the team will offer a CAS on Preventing Violent Conflicts at the University of Basel. Learn more
Launch of Knowledge for Peace Research Project
On 20-22 March 2017 the DwP team together with project partners from Côte d’Ivoire and South Sudan organized a series of launch events for the new research project Knowledge for Peace. Understanding Research, Policy, Practice Synergies. A public roundtable, a dialogue workshop and team meetings took place with participants from Canada, Cote d'Ivoire, South Sudan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Hissène Habré Tribunal Archives
The Extraordinary African Chambers (EAC), which convicted the former Chadian dictator Hissène Habre of crimes against humanity and war crimes, will soon close its doors. With the end of the trial, a decision regarding their archives needs to be taken. swisspeace is currently in touch with different stakeholders to support the securing of the EAC archives. Archives of Albania’s former secret policeNicola Diday was mandated by UNDP as an international expert to support the Albanian Authority on Access to Information on the former State Security Service on questions related to archiving and dealing with the past. The authority is tasked to open up the Communist-era secret police files, allowing persons who were persecuted under the former system to access their files.
Archives against Genocide Denialism?
How are archives used to establish a collective memory and identity in situations of conflicting memories in cases such as the official Turkish denial of the Armenian genocide? The DwP working paper by PhD candidate Melanie Altanian published in January 2017 discusses how claims to reliability, objectivity, and other attributes are understood in archival science and memory studies, using a philosophical lens.
