In February, EED went to visit Syrian refugee communities in Lebanon and met with EED partners and grantees from Syria and Lebanon to discuss their activities, plans and challenges.
In the beginning of March, on the occasion of the Ukraine week in the European Parliament, EED together with the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee (PAC) and the Ukrainian Think Tanks Liaison Office in Brussels co-organised a debate "Verkhovna Rada and Civil Society: Collaboration for Reforms in 2016”. In the same week, EED also hosted the launch of Brussels UkraineLab and was one of the co-organisers of a panel discussion “Reforms in Ukraine: Milestones for 2016”, together with the Open Society European Policy Institute, the Reanimation Package of Reforms and the Ukrainian Think Tanks Liaison Office in Brussels.
MEP Lambsdorff re-elected Chair of EED Executive Committee
“I am delighted to be re-elected as Chair of the Executive Committee. The EED has achieved impressive work in its first three years helping democracy activists respond to the increasing challenges they face in the European neighbourhood and beyond. I look forward to play a key role in driving this forward over the next few years.” noted Lambsdorff.
#EEDevent: Women Leaders: The solution to peace and security
On 14 March, following International Women’s Day, EED and the International Republican Institute’s (IRI) Women’s Democracy Network (WDN) organised the panel “Women Leaders: The solution to peace and security”. Four women, from different countries but with similar challenges, shared their stories that brought them into politics.
"Houses without doors”–international premiere at Berlinale
Houses without doors, a film produced by EED grantee, Bidayyat premiered at Berlinale fim festival. Syrian-Armenian director Avo Kaprealian filmed the clashes on the streets of Aleppo from the window of his housing block, showing the changes which take place place in the city of war. The film links together Syrian reality and documentary images of the Armenian genocide.
#EEDevent: Book presentation: “Civil Resistance in the Arab Spring – Triumphs and Disasters”
In March EED and Carnegie Europe organised the presentation of the book: “Civil Resistance in the Arab Spring – Triumphs and Disasters”.Two of the co-editors Adam Roberts and Michael J. Willis discussed the course and fate of the Arab Spring and argued that, in the absence of preparations for a reformed constitutional order, civil resistance is not likely to bring lasting change. "Andekchi Chkoun?/ Nécrose" - a movie produced by EED grantee from Tunisia
The documentary produced by ATAC, EED grantee, highlights the problems of corruption faced by Tunisian Citizens. The film is part of the initiative “Ecran Ouvert Contre Corruption".
Demand for more women in politics in Palestine
EED partner, Palestinian Centre for Peace and Democracy celebrated International Women's Day by holding a discussion on women's role in politics, followed by a demonstration for a wider participation of women in the upcoming elections. 60 women from Jenin and Nablus participated in the session and two of them talked about their experience in the electoral process.

Equal Rights instead of flowers in Moldova
On 7 March, ahead of International Women’s day EED partner, the Group of Feminist Initiatives from Moldova organised its first public lecture “Identity, body, activism”. On 8 March they marched with the slogan: “Sexism is stealing our chances” which aimed to raise awareness about gender equality.
Armenia’s constitutional reform referendum “illegitimate”, claim local observers
Two months after Armenia’s referendum to change the country’s constitution, held on December 6 2015, EED supported Armenia’s Citizen Observer Initiative (COI) released a full report that details “gross, multiple, and widespread examples of voting violations and electoral fraud”. Read more
New Faces, EED partner from Ukraineconcluded its work.
Sixteen civil society activists were selected to be part of the “New Faces” initiative and attended various personal development trainings, had meetings with experts in local governance, as well as media. All of this has helped them increase their visibility ahead of the last year’s October local elections. Results are worth sharing: five participants became members of the Kharkiv city and regional councils and three came second in the elections.
#EEDevent: EED welcomes Prague Civil Society Centre
“There should be more organisations working in favour of democracy support. Centralisation of work is rather a way to kill civil society, whereas proliferation leads to its development. There cannot be too many supporters of civil society and democracy,” said EED’s Executive Director Jerzy Pomianowski. Read more
