Overview: Last year’s Nobel Prize in Economics went to Professor Angus Deaton for advancing the field of economic research on how to measure and analyze welfare and poverty. How to improve welfare, protect the less well-off from adverse events, and support poverty reduction are all topics central to the World Bank’s mission. This presentation will describe the concepts of welfare and poverty analysis used by the World Bank’s poverty economists globally. This will be followed by an overview of the most recent trends on poverty, shared prosperity, and welfare dynamics in Armenia.
Nistha Sinha is a Senior Economist in the Poverty Global Practice of the World Bank working on the topics of poverty, distributional analysis and gender equality primarily in the countries of Europe and Central Asia region. She earned a Masters in Economics from Delhi School of Economics, and a Ph.D. in Economics from University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining the Bank, Ms. Sinha was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University’s Economic Growth Center.
Moritz Meyer is an Economist in the Poverty Global Practice of the World Bank, working on the topics of poverty measurement, distributional analysis and labor markets with a particular focus on the South Caucasus region and the European Union. He earned his Master degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Mannheim and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the European University Institute in Florence. Prior to joining the World Bank, Mr. Meyer worked in the research department at the Asian Development Bank and the International Labor Organization.
