Conflict Prevention and Resolution through Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-proliferation
The OSCE Scholarship for Peace and Security is a joint initiative of OSCE and United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs at Vienna in partnership with a number of organisations whose work contribute to disarmament, non-proliferation (DNP) and development-related issues.
The initiative offers a training programme providing foundation skills and knowledge on non-proliferation, disarmament and development related issues. In particular, it also focuses on conflict prevention, arms control and confidence and security building measures implemented in accordance with the commitments in the OSCE area.
The programme consists of two components:
Online foundation course lasting 8 weeks on:
- Weapons of mass destruction
- Conventional weapons
- Disarmament and development
- Gender and disarmament
- Impact of conflict on neighbouring regions
- Multilateral security coopearation initiatives
In-depth in-person course lasting one week to be held in Vienna (Austria) with:
- Workshops
- Case studies
- Lectures
- Visits to Vienna based organisations
The space available for the course is limited, registration is reserved to nationals of OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation.
A total of 70 scholarships are available to facilitate participation of young professional woman and men from OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation. The participation to the in-person training is reserved for women, all genders are encouraged to apply for the online course scholarship.

What is unique about this training programme?
Who is the target audience of the training courses?
Early career professionals from various fields from OSCE participating States and Partners for Co-operation. It is not required to have previous knowledge of the issues of disarmament, non-proliferation and development.
What will participants learn?
This online and in-person course introduces participants to key conceptual and practical aspects of:
- Conflict cycle including Conflict prevention and resolution
- Arms control, confidence and security building measures
- Non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
- Conventional weapons and ammunition
- Disarmament and development
- Gender aspects
- Peace and development-related technologies
How is the training courses organised?
The training course is composed of:
- 8 weeks online foundation training (about 40 hours)
- 1 week in-person in-depth training (about 40 hours)
- Optional: 1 final examination essay to obtain university credits (about 40 hours) The online component includes: self-paced webinars with weekly sessions, reading material and exams, interaction with the instructor and the fellow participants.
What do participants need to follow the training courses?
Online:
- a computer or mobile device, with audio
- reliable internet connection
- no special software is required
In-person:
- travel to Vienna, Austria to attend workshops and training sessions for five days
What kind of certification will the participants receive?
Certificate of completion: all participants successfully completing the training course will receive an official certificate of completion.
Voluntary diploma: eligible participants who successfully pass the additional voluntary examination will receive an official diploma from UPEACE, carrying university credits.
