On 11 May 2016, the UN and the Government of Armenia launched the National Progress Report on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which summarizes Armenia’s progress towards the implementation of the MDGs in the period of 2000-2015.

In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan noted that Armenia boasts tangible progress in the prevention of child and maternal mortality, access to education, clean water. There is some progress achieved for other goals as well, however sustained efforts will be needed to improve performance for the rest of the indicators.

“The National Sustainable Development Council held a regular meeting last week, which ushered in the launch of the process of nationalization of the UN’s new development agenda - “Transforming the world: a new agenda for 2030.” The new agenda features 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets. Armenia has to identify goals and targets in line with our national strategic programs, including the 2014-2025 Strategic Program of Prospective Development. Regardless of the name of the new agenda: all we want is to provide a prosperous, peaceful and prosperous life for our citizens, which requires consistent and hard work on the part of public institutions, NGOs and international organizations,” said the Prime Minister.

The Head of the Government thanked the UN Armenia Office for assistance, as well as all those government agencies and individuals that attended the preparation of the report. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that cooperation between Armenia and the United Nations will be further strengthened ahead of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. UN Resident Coordinator Bradley Busetto reinstated that the UN is prepared to assist the Government of Armenia in its efforts aimed at coordinating the mainstreaming and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. “Strong national ownership and leadership will be the foundation of all efforts in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Doing that successfully will require joined up planning not only across the government and the sectors, but also engagement of the whole of society – the parliament, civil society, private sector and media – who all have roles in supporting and monitoring the achievement of the SDGs,” said Mr. Busetto.

In conclusion, experts from EV Consulting Sevak Hovhannisyan and Gagik Gabrielyan presented the key findings of Armenia’s Millennium Development Goals progress report.
