Defending Human Rights - Public Discussion 2016
Source: here
On the occasion of the international human rights day, the Human Rights House Yerevan organizes a public discussion on the achievements as well as the challenges and threats faced by human rights defenders in Armenia in 2016. The discussion will be followed by the screening of the documentary "Listen to Me".
Context of the public discussion:
2016 has been a challenging year for the human rights community in Armenia; Consitutional amendments followed by a referendum with many instances of electoral fraud, the escalation of the armed conflict on the borders of Nagorno-Karabakh, the uprising of the armed group "Sasna Dzrer" followed by mass protests and police brutality and arbitrary mass arrests took its toll on the human rights community of the country.
In addition to these local issues, 2016 challenged as well globally the idea of human rights protection and its importance both in authoritarian as well as in the most democratic western societies with the Brexit event, the US elections that brought a new wave of hate.
Amid these global and local realities, Human rights House Yerevan invites civil society actors, NGOs, activists, concerned people to a public discussion around the challenges faced by human rights defenders in Armenia for the past year.
