"Documenting human rights violations" two-day training
Human Rights House Yerevan organizes a two-day training in documenting human rights violations for Armenian human rights defenders. Past years in Armenia have been marked by violations of the freedom of assembly and expression and the excessive use of force by the law enforcement during rally dispersals.
The aim of the training is to train human rights defenders in documenting human rights violations relating to the exercise of freedom of assembly and expression.
The training is organized with the financial support from the Human Rights House Foundation, with the grant from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
ORGANISER & PARTNER
Human Rights House Yerevan is the union of independent, local NGOs, joining forces for the protection, support and empowerment of human rights defenders in Armenia. The members of the Human Rights House Yerevan are:

Human Rights House Yerevan was registered in 2014 and is a member of Human Rights House Network.
Human Rights House Foundation is a Secretariat of the Human Rights House Network, which is a community of human rights defenders working for more than 100 independent organisations operating in 16 Human Rights Houses across mostly Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Empowering, supporting and protecting human rights defenders, the Network members unite their voices to promote the universal freedoms of assembly, association and expression and the right to be a human rights defender. The Secretariat of the Human Rights House Network - Human Rights House Foundation - is based in Oslo and Geneva, with representations in Tbilisi and Brussels.
TRAINERS
The trainers are the experts from Human Rights House Zagreb, Human Rights House Belgrade, Educational Human Rights House Chernihiv, Human Rights House Network International Law in Advocacy Program and NGO Human Rights Vector from Ukraine, who are specialized in the documentation of human rights violations in various contexts and in ethical principles of documentation for human rights defenders.
TOPICS
The main topics of the training are as follow:
- Ethical dilemmas and principles of documenting human rights violations relating to the exercise of freedom of assembly and expression violations and armed conflict;
- Taking statements from the victims of alleged police brutality within the context of rally dispersal (method, types of questions, visual documentation);
- Documenting ongoing rally dispersal (safety, language to use, visual documentation);
- Specificities of documenting human rights violations in the context of armed conflict.
LANGUAGE
English and Russian with simultaneous translation.

WHO CAN APPLY & HOW
The training is open to the human rights defenders from civil society organizations, whose activities are aimed at the protection of human rights, human rights monitoring, strategic litigation and human rights advocacy.
The training will be interactive and will be focused on the development of practical skills. Therefore, the priority will be given to the human rights defenders who:
- Plan to document human rights violations during and/or after rally dispersal in practice;
- Plan to prepare awareness-raising reports for general public, governmental agencies, and international organizations and media reports based on the documentation; litigate cases domestically and/or internationally.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
FULL PARTICIPATION IN THE TRAINING IS MANDATORY. The meals during the training will be covered by the organizers. The participants should be fluent in Russian or English.
